Early Morning Greenhouse Rituals & the Start of Dahlia Season

There’s a certain kind of excitement that arrives long before the flowers do.

For dahlia lovers, the season begins in the quiet moments, hauling pots in and out each day to slowly harden them off, watching the weather obsessively, and checking trays for any signs of life. I was lucky enough to talk my husband into a little urban greenhouse this year, and now it’s my first stop after coffee each morning, hoping to discover new sprouts that appeared overnight.

Next, it’s hauling bags of soil, rearranging seed trays for the hundredth time, and convincing yourself that you absolutely still have room for more plants.

These early weeks rarely look glamorous. There’s dirt on the floor, cold mornings, and more patience required than most of us easily possess. But somehow it all becomes part of the magic. Gardening has a way of slowing us down with anticipation that is almost as exciting as the flowers themselves.

At Dahlia Fever, I believe some of the most beautiful parts of gardening happen before the garden is fully awake, those hopeful moments of preparation, planning, and possibility.

And if you’re already counting how many tubers you’ve bought this year, know that you’re not alone.
