Small Garden, Big Dreams

Gardeners are dreamers.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re growing dahlias in a single container on a patio, tending a backyard cutting garden, or planting rows of flowers across an entire field.

We all have one thing in common:

We’re always imagining what’s next.

One more variety.

One more garden bed.

One more season to try that color combination we’ve been dreaming of.

That’s what “Small Garden, Big Dreams” means to me.

The size of the garden doesn’t matter at all.

It’s about possibility.

When I planted my first dahlias, I could imagine so clearly what they might become. But the thing is, they didn’t quite turn out that way.

They didn’t grow as tall. The blooms weren’t as big. Some flourished, some struggled, and to make matters worse, I didn’t even dig up the tubers that year. Living in Zone 6b, I treated them like annuals.

It pains me to think of all the poor dahlia tubers I sent to an early grave those first few seasons.

I’ve come a long way as a gardener since then.

But one thing hasn’t changed.

I’m still dreaming.

Next year, I’ll add a few raised beds. Someday, a bigger greenhouse with enough room for quiet winter mornings and a cup of coffee.

The thing is, no matter where we begin, our dreams always seem to grow a little faster than the garden itself.

And I think that’s part of the magic.

Gardening teaches us to imagine what isn’t there yet.

A plant becomes a bloom.

A bloom becomes a bouquet.

A patch of soil becomes something beautiful.

Every season begins with hope.

Not perfection.

Just the belief that something wonderful might grow if we’re willing to plant it.

The dream will always be bigger than the garden.

And that’s exactly as it should be.

So here’s to the gardeners who are always planning, always planting, and always dreaming.

Small garden. Big dreams.
